CleanLocs Knowledge | Retwist Time!......or Is It?

DOING IT TOO TIGHT

If you twist when the new growth is too short, a couple of things can happen;  The hairs, if too short, won't allow enough space for the Loc to be looped through if using the interloc method with the rug-latch. This is unnecessarily painful and can cause hair to pop right out the follicle never growing back resulting in thin roots. Sometimes the new growth is sufficient but the loctician may use the NSEW method and this often results in breakage in an attempt to force the thicker loc through a smaller space when trying to loop it through more than once. This is also one of the leading reasons that people get turned off of the interloc method; for fear of pain and breakage.  Twisting new growth and loose hairs too tightly in order to keep a manicured look can also lead to similar results as well as receeding your hairline. As with most things, too much of anything isn't good for you.

WAITING TO LONG

On the other scale of things, waiting to long can bear similar results as over tightening. Neglecting to tighten your Locs for too long can cause undue pressure at the line of demarcation, which is where your new growth meets the already formed Loc. The already formed Loc is far more dense than the root, and the root which is made up of our loose hairs, are still curls that will stretch out when pulled. As a result, the already formed lock weighs down and stretches out the curls in the new growth. After a while, the line of demarcation gets weak from the unbalanced force of gravity. Think of tying a rock to the end of a rubber band, and stretching it further and further..... eventually, you know what happens. And it looks a lot like this picture here.

SO WHEN DO I DO IT?

It is important to remember that the length of the new growth is more important than the time that has passed. Often caught up in rules and rituals, we forget that Locs are like fingerprints in the sense that they are truly unique to each individual. And even with that out of the equation, everyone's hair and nails do not grow at the same rate. Therefore it is unreasonable to expect your new growth to be the same as mine since we have different metabolisms, hair textures and diets.

RULE OF THUMB... PUN INTENDED

I learned a long time ago the importance of knowing the measurements of random parts of your body. Something to do with being creative.... With that being said, the top of your thumb is in an around an inch. If you hold your Loc at the root with the tip of your thumb touching your scalp, and the line of demarcation is past the top of your thumb, its time for a tightening. If a reference to time makes you feel better, every 4-8wks is a fair measure.

CleanLocs Knowledge | Do You Suffer From Perm Mentality ?

Often, I will hear client's speak of their experiences with their hair throughout their journey toward strong mature Locs. And often I scratch my head... You can think of Perm Mentality as a sort of extended sub division of the Slave Mentality; in the sense that it is so ingrained in our psyche, that we generally don't even realize it's there. There are a few Perm Mentality traits that I've seen over the years. Here are a few.  Do you suffer from Perm Mentality?

Also Check out A Beautiful Disaster and leave your comments below!

GREASE & OIL: NATURAL OR OTHERWISE

There is a huge misconception that your hair cannot grow, or be beautiful unless you treat it with some type of product.  This is an easy habit to slip into because we were once so accustomed to the requirement of hair products as we attempted to get our hair to go against nature. Now, it is good to use things in our hair that is nourishing just like we do our skin, body and mind. However, things things should be used as just that. Nourishment. Learn and understand your hair as you would your diet, or exercise routine. In fact these are the things that encourage the growth of strong beautiful Locs, not pomades, hair foods, waxes, gels and sprays.

TYING YOUR HAIR AT NIGHT

We are used to tying our hair at night to keep the perm laiiiiid. Curls pressed out. and baby hairs straight. That makes sense when you are trying to achieve a look that isn't naturally yours to begin with. But Locs need the encouragement of friction and knotting in order for them to mature. It makes more sense to cover your Locs when in unfamiliar territory, to keep it from being infiltrated by the day's pollutants and free radicals like dust, germs, bacteria, smells, and energies.

CONDITIONER

When hair is permed or flat-ironed, each of the hairs that grows from our follicles lay next to each other for the most part.  Conditioner is designed to leave a coating on the strands that was stripped during processing. When hair is in its natural curly state the hairs are partying with each other in a beautifully coiled chaos! And when that party decides to get down with the rub-a-dub style....they hand out in tightly coled groups and are difficult to break the bond. Not much can get through, and if it does, its tough to get out. So applying conditioner to these tightly coiled, intertwined nattys is going to be a hella un-fun time to get out. It also attracts lint and dust which sticks to the heavy surface.

CleanLocs Roots | Cover Your Hair, It's Too Pretty!

When I let my Locs down, I get comments. When I style my Locs accessorizing my look with neat braids and Locs twisted into a carefully constructed crown I get even more compliments!  But it is no where near the amount of positive feedback I get when I wrap my Locs. "Oh wow! Your wrap looks beautiful" they say staring in awe and wondering how I managed to drape all that fabric so gracefully over my mane.

Some women cover their hair in slight shame in order to assimilate, while others do it for the sole purpose of "protecting" their hair. Check out the article above, to gain a little bit of insight and history regarding the wearing of stunning natural black hairstyles and eventually, the headwrap as well the backfire of the elitist politics surrounding it.

Do you feel beautiful wearing your Locs styled? What is the best compliment someone has made regarding your headwrap?  #CleanLocs would LOVE to hear about it!! Drop us a line below!

CleanLocs Knowledge | 5 Clues It's Time To Wash Your Locs

SOMEONE NOTICES

Because the task of washing Locs can be a daunting one, its tempting to turn a blind eye to the need for a wash. If someone genuinely asks you when was the last time you washed your hair because they say it appears dirty, it probably is. They are probably not being mean but just can see what you don't want to.

IT'S HEAVY

The number one comment #CleanLocs client's make is that their hair feels lighter after having a SteamWash'n'Loc. If you find that when putting your hair up it feels heavier than normal it's likely filled up with dust, residue, pollutants, oils, butters etc which is weighing it down. On their own, these factors don't seem all that heavy but collectively it can add up.

YOU CAN SMELL IT

When your Locs smell anything but fresh, its a good time to give them a wash. As with residue, smells can linger and layer on top of one another cause quite the evolution of funk in your Locs. Often we cannot smell our own smell, the way it is impossible to tickle yourself.  So if someone indicates that you're Locs are a little less than fresh, and you can't smell it, try rubbing your roots between your fingers and give that a whiff just in case.

ITS DULL OR DUSTY

Anything that is shiny is so because it reflects light, that includes hair. When hair is unclean it coats the strands with oil, dust, free-radicals, and whatever else your Locs come into contact with. This can cause a dull finish which decreases the amount of light that can be reflected off each strand, in turn giving a dull appearance. Time to wash all that off and restore your Locs naturally lit lustre.

IT'S ITCHY

When people get itchy it is because there are tiny organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye, physically crawling on the surface of your skin. Gross. Since your scalp is made of skin, that makes your head no exception to this fact. People intrinsically scratch their skin as a reaction to scrape the organisms off their dermis to relieve the itch. A better way to resolve this is to wash your skin, or in this case, hair.

CleanLocs | Why You Should Wash Your Locs

When perusing Loc blogs and the like, a question that is often asked when starting out is how frequently to wash your NewLocs if even at all. I'm not sure how this rumour got started that you should not clean your hair in order for Locs to form, but I would really like to ask that they stop perpetuating this myth. You MUST, I repeat MUST MUST wash your Locs!

In everyday terms, Locs are fomed by creating a bunch of random knots with a bunch of random threadlike hairs and each loc can have a few hundred hairs.  If your hair is not clean there is a slick layer of oil and/or sebum on it. Now, something that is oily is usually slippery, and something that I'd slippery is generally more difficult to create knots with. Therefore the dirtier your hair, the less chance of knots forming or any tangling action, and definitely less chance, and longer time for Locs to form.

MIXED-RACE CLIENT WITH UNRAVELING LOCS

MIXED-RACE CLIENT WITH UNRAVELING LOCS

Sometimes I hear "my hair texture is different" and so this or that person feels they need to avoid washing so that the new Locs don't unravel. You might want to get a pen and paper for this next part; all new Locs unravel. LOL! Especially so for mixedrace hair, trust me I'm mixed with everything you can think of and "they" told me my hair would never Loc, because of the texture. But I tried my best to leave it alone, I washed it once a week, and in 4mos I was official.

Think of your new Locs like a plant, a mighty tree with strong roots. It is a cultivation. It requires, care, patience and a positive attitude. Your hair needs to be clean so that your scalp can get the oxygen and sunlight it needs to grow, and so that the hairs have enough "grip" to form the knots that create your Loc shaft. It takes time.

After having all kinds of gunk put into his Locs and being advised not to wash his hair for a few months, check out this client's testimonial below talking about his SteamWash'n'Loc experience after 2months of not washing.
